The Surf Guard program was in place at Long Beach for forty years before being cut by the previous Conservative government in 2012.

"High tourism season is fast approaching," the MPs wrote, "The beaches at Pacific Rim will soon be flooded with visitors. Ensuring their safety must be a top priority."

Over the May long weekend, an Ottawa woman tragically died in a surfing accident at Long Beach in Pacific Rim. The Surf Guard program had previously perfomed an average of eight water rescues, and made about 800 contacts with people, each year.

As a former employee of Pacific Rim for a number of years, MP Stetski personally witnessed the benefit of having the Surf Guards in place.
