Wayne in Question Period: Better protection needed for Saskatchewan's grasslands

Today Kootenay--Columbia MP and NDP National Parks Critic Wayne Stetski rose during Question Period to call on the federal government to ensure better ecological protection for Saskatchewan's prairie grasslands.

Last week, the National Trust for Canada named Saskatchewan’s Prairie Grasslands as one of this year’s Top 10 Endangered Places in Canada, due to the Saskatchewan government’s decision to sell off well-managed Community Pasture lands to private owners.

Through careful land management by the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Association (PFRA), the Community Pastures program was a conservation success, restoring native grasslands throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Today, the PRFA Pastures’ 1.8 million acres comprise some of the last remnants of Canada’s native grasslands, a diverse ecosystem home to many species at risk, Indigenous archaeological sites and homesteader heritage.
