Wayne in Question Period: Liberals must improve accessibility in national parks

Today, Kootenay--Columbia MP Wayne rose in the House of Commons during Question Period to demand that the federal government take action to make national parks accessible to all Canadians.

From 1988-1995, Parks Canada implemented a Parks Access Program, which was highly regarded. However, since that time, much of the accessible infrastructure in the parks has declined significantly and the implementation of accessible features has been completely pushed aside. Expensive amenities that had been purchased for parks, such as all-terrain wheelchairs, have disappeared, and the maintenance and upkeep on trails and entrances to accessible outhouses has diminished.

To make matters worse, marketing brochures, maps and websites for the parks do not always accurately reflect that the accessibility of sites has changed.

As NDP National Parks Critic, Wayne will continue to hold the government accountable to ensure that Canada's national parks are accessible to all Canadians -- including those living with disabilities.
