Wayne in Question Period: Liberals must provide details on proposed Jasper bike trail

Today, Kootenay--Columbia MP and NDP National Parks Critic Wayne Stetski rose in the House of Commons to demand transparency from the Liberal government on a proposed bike trail in Jasper National Park.

As part of Budget 2016, the Liberal government announced it is planning to spend $65.9 million on a "world-class" biking and walking trail through Jasper National Park. However, no details about where or how long the path will be have been made available, and no public consultation has been done. There is also no mention of a long-distance biking trail of this size in the Jasper National Park Management Plan.

Local stakeholders have raised serious concerns about the lack of available information, the absence of public consultation, and the potential threat that such a large infrastructure project might pose to the ecological integrity of Jasper National Park.

Unfortunately, even when prompted in the House, the Minister of the Environment failed to provide any details about the proposal.
