Wayne's Statement on the rejection of the Mother Canada proposal

OTTAWA – Today NDP National Parks Critic Wayne Stetski (Kootenay – Columbia) released the following statement regarding Liberal government’s announcement that it will withdraw its support for the proposal for the Never Forgotten National Memorial:

Last week, I sent a letter to Minister McKenna, calling on the government to reject the controversial proposal known as ‘Mother Canada’. We welcome today’s announcement, and are relieved that the government has made the right decision.

This seven-storey monstrosity should never have been considered for placement in a national park. New Democrats have long understood that this location posed an ecological threat to the park and lacked the support of Canadians.

I am pleased to have been part of bringing this issue to its appropriate resolution. As NDP Critic for National Parks, I will continue to emphasize the importance of protecting the ecological integrity of Canada’s natural and cultural treasures.
